The real reason you feel older than you are — and it has a name
It's not your age. It's a process. And it responds faster than you'd expect.

There's a pattern that shows up so often after 50 that most people assume it's just how aging works.
You exercise — but recovery takes twice as long as it used to. You eat roughly the same — but your joints are stiffer than they were five years ago. You sleep — but wake up with a low-grade feeling of something being slightly wrong.
Nothing dramatic. Nothing that sends you to the ER. Just a persistent background hum of "off."
There's a word for this. And it's not "getting older."
It's called inflammaging. Yes — it's a real clinical term. Coined in 2000. And once you know it, you start recognizing it everywhere.
What inflammaging actually is
Inflammaging is a term coined in 2000 by Italian immunologist Claudio Franceschi to describe a specific phenomenon: the slow, chronic, low-level inflammation that accumulates in the body with age — and silently drives most of what we associate with "feeling old."
Not the inflammation you feel after a sprained ankle — that's acute, purposeful, and it resolves.
This is different.
This is inflammation that never fully turns off. That runs at a low simmer, year after year, quietly wearing down the systems it was meant to protect.
It doesn't announce itself with a fever or visible swelling. It shows up in how long it takes your knee to stop aching after a walk. In the brain fog that rolls in after a stressful week. In the slow creep of fatigue that doesn't fully lift with rest.

Where it comes from
Your immune system is designed to respond to threats — infections, injuries, toxins — and then stand down. The problem is that several features of modern life keep it in a state of low activation long after the original threat is gone.
Sleep disruption is one of the most direct triggers. Even modest, chronic sleep loss elevates inflammatory markers within days. Not years — days. Your immune system interprets poor sleep as a threat signal and responds accordingly.
Visceral fat — the fat that accumulates around the organs rather than under the skin — is metabolically active in a way surface fat is not. It continuously releases small amounts of inflammatory proteins into the bloodstream. This is one reason waist circumference is a more accurate predictor of inflammatory burden than overall weight.
The gut barrier. When the lining of the gut becomes more permeable with age — a process sometimes called "leaky gut" in popular media, and "intestinal hyperpermeability" in research — bacterial fragments can cross into the bloodstream and trigger immune responses that were never meant to happen there.
Chronic psychological stress keeps cortisol elevated. And while cortisol is anti-inflammatory in short bursts, it becomes pro-inflammatory when it stays elevated over months and years. The immune system essentially gets confused by the mixed signals and stays partially activated.
None of these are character flaws. They are systems responding to inputs — which means the inputs can be changed.
What actually moves the needle
This is where most articles hand you a list of supplements and call it a day.
The research tells a more interesting story.
Omega-3 fatty acids — specifically EPA and DHA — are among the most studied anti-inflammatory inputs available without a prescription. They work by shifting the balance of signaling molecules your cells produce, tipping the ratio away from pro-inflammatory toward resolving. Fatty fish two to three times a week, or a quality fish oil supplement, consistently shows measurable effects on inflammatory markers within eight to twelve weeks. Your cells make decisions about inflammation based on the ratio of fats available to them. Change the ratio — and the decisions change.
Fiber — specifically diverse fiber — feeds the gut bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids, which in turn reduce intestinal permeability and lower systemic inflammatory tone. Mixing insoluble, soluble, and fermentable fibers boosts microbiome diversity, improves metabolic markers, and lowers risks for colon cancer and type 2 diabetes. Not one fiber supplement. Variety — vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fruit — rotating across the week.
Resistance exercise reduces circulating inflammatory markers more reliably than cardio alone. Muscle tissue, when challenged, releases anti-inflammatory compounds called myokines. The muscles are not just passengers in this process — they are active participants in regulating the inflammatory climate of the whole body.
Sleep — protected, not just lengthened. Eight hours of fragmented sleep does not produce the same anti-inflammatory effect as seven hours of consolidated, deep sleep. The quality of the architecture matters as much as the duration.
Time-restricted eating — not extreme fasting, simply eating within a consistent 8–10 hour window — gives the gut lining time to repair overnight, reduces inflammatory signaling, and improves insulin sensitivity. Even micro-walking after meals — as little as one to three minutes — measurably reduces glucose spikes and the inflammatory cascade that follows them

One last thing.
Inflammaging is not inevitable, and it is not irreversible.
The research on this is consistent: lifestyle inputs move inflammatory biomarkers in measurable ways, often within weeks. Not years. Not after a complete overhaul of how you live.
The body is responsive. It was designed to be.
The question has never been whether it can change. It's whether you know what to ask it.
